Preparing your Quilt for Longarming

Assembling of a quilt sandwich, curved basting pins and sewing accessories.jpg

01

Yay!  No basting required.

  • Do not baste your quilt. Each layer is loaded separately on the longarm.

02

Measure backing and batting.

  • The quilt backing needs to be at least 4" wider on each side of the quilt (ex: a 70" x 90" top would require a backing that is at least 78" by 98") . The batting can be approx. 3" larger on each side.

Square, press and trim.

  • Do your best to square your top and backing.

  • Press seams and trim extra threads (this prevents dark threads from showing through any light fabric). I will of course try to catch any strays as I go!

04

Final Notes.

  • If your top or backing are directional, please mark the top with a safety pin.

  • Avoid sewing embellishments, such as buttons or sequins to the quilt until after it's been quilted.
