Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is edge to edge quilting?

Edge to edge quilting (also referred to as pantograph quilting) is a design that covers your entire quilt, including sashing, borders and applique.  It is stitched out with a computerized pantograph design.

2.   How should I prep my quilt?

Here are some tips to prepare your quilt:

  • The good news is you do not have to baste your quilt!

  • Do your best to square your top and backing.

  • Press seams and trim extra threads (this prevents dark threads from showing through any light fabric). I will of course try to catch any strays as I go!

  • The quilt backing needs to be at least 4-5" wider on each side of the quilt (ex: a 70" x 90" top would require a backing that is at least 78" by 98") .  The batting can be approx. 3" larger on each side.

  • Avoid sewing embellishments, such as buttons or sequins to the quilt until after it's been quilted.

  • If your top or backing are directional, please mark the top with a safety pin.

3. I have a pieced backing. Is that okay?

Yes, of course. If you have the option, then piece the back horizontally instead of vertically as it loads better on the machine and results in less drawing in of the quilt throughout the quilting. But it certainly isn't necessary.

3. Why do you need the backing to be at least 4" larger than the top?

This extra fabric allows the quilt to be loaded onto the longarm frame.  Without enough backing fabric, the quilt cannot be properly secured to the machine for quilting.

4. What is your current turnaround time?

I can currently complete and return your quilt to you within two weeks of the quilt's arrival date. This turnaround can vary but will always be posted on my website.

5. Can I provide my own batting?

Yes, you can either send me your own preferred batting or you can purchase your batting from me. I  offer Hobbs premium heirloom 80/20 poly-cotton blend or 100% cotton (unbleached).  I also have limited quantities of bleached cotton, wool and bamboo.  Please indicate on the Book your quilt form if you would like to provide your batting or purchase it from me.

6. What pantographs do you have?

I have hundreds of pantographs. Please start with the Available Designs page but if you have something else in mind, we can discuss other options or share the cost of purchasing a digital pantograph that I don't currently have.

7. What if I don't know what pantograph will work best with my quilt?

This is the fun part. Choosing a pantograph design that you love is important so I'm more than happy to work with you to identify the right one for your quilt.

8. Do you trim the quilt?

I typically do not trim the quilt after it comes off the longarm but am happy to do that upon request at no extra charge.

9. Can I ship my quilt to you?

Yes.  Once you have completed the Book your quilt form I will contact you directly with my shipping address in Zephyr, Ontario. Please ensure your quilt is securely wrapped in a plastic bag for extra protection within the shipping box and ship with a tracking number. I will also return the quilt to you securely packaged with a tracking number and will add the return shipping cost to your invoice.
